How to change the extension of any file in Windows

For some purposes we need to change or sometimes remove the extensions of files. All the files have some extensions. The extensions are last 3-4letters of files which helps the operating system to determine the application for opening that particular file.
For example, all notepad files have ".txt" extensions and open with Notepad, PDF files have ".pdf" extension and opens with Adobe Reader, power point presentations have ".ppt" etc.

But is several cases we need to change the extensions of our file, this is generally not a need of average or low end user, but at professional levels, its a necessary job.
In Microsoft windows OS, the default system settings does not allow the users to change extensions of KNOWN FILE TYPES. Here known file types means the files that are associated which some programs to get opens, like exe files or the jpeg images.
Thus to make change in extensions of all kind of files in windows, the disabled option needs to be enabled.

For this

  • Open windows explorer or any folder window
  • Click on organise(top left corner)

  • Select folder and search options
  • Click the "View" tab
  • Now un-tick the check box of "Hide extension for known file types"

  • Click OK and you are done
Now you can change or even remove extensions of any files in your system.
